The first thing I usually look at when people inform me they want to lose weight, is their drinking habits (regular drinks NOT alcohol – that’s another article!).

You can get pretty awesome weight loss results just from cutting out sugary drinks and increasing the amount of water you drink…but not everyone is that keen on the taste (or lack thereof) of water.

So today I thought we’d take a look at a few useful options on how to make tap water taste better – simple and healthy – check ’em out!

SIMPLY ADD FRUIT

SIMPLY ADD FRUIT

I like to think of fruit options as ‘water enhancers’ – an incredibly simple and healthy way to flavor a glass of tap water.

I would recommend starting off with a few citrus fruit options, such as lemons, limes, and oranges. If you don’t mind the ‘bulky’ feel to your drink, you could go for the more diverse option of raspberries or watermelon.

When the summer months come around, my mother likes to add cucumber and fresh mint to chilled water (extremely refreshing option!).

A lot of people tend to miss the bubbly effect of their choice of soft drink – they find still water a constant reminder that there are sweeter alternatives out there!

I have to be honest with you, I much prefer a carbonated mineral water as opposed to a straight mineral water. Again, add some fruit or fruit juices to the water – see what you can create!

Fizzy water tends to feel like much more of a treat…or is it just me?


COLD TEMPERATURE

I always prefer my soft drinks cold – even in the winter! To go one step further, I would say that iced water tastes better than water served at room temperature.

I’m including this option because a friend introduced it to me last summer…and it was great…

She uses flavoured ice cubes to chill down her water. Simply use fruit additives…or any additives you fancy really…and flavour the water in the ice tray (before you chuck it in the freezer – obviously!).

If visitors pop round, and you want to be more creative, use ice cube trays that come in fun shapes, like stars, circles, or even fish (I like the fish shapes best!)

SWAP SOFT DRINKS FOR TEA

Drink tea instead of water

Now, before we go any further, I should really point out that we are talking about the more HEALTHIER options of tea here (not your bargain basement standard black teabag from the local store!).

We are looking at herbal, fruit, green, white, and red teas here – the options that are widely considered to be a LOT more healthy for you overall.

These teas contain little to no caffeine and have a great selection of exciting and enticing flavors to choose out of.

First stop is the local health store, or even the health section at your local supermarket – you’ll be quite surprised at what they offer there…if you look hard enough!

If you take to them, don’t stop there – start researching the huge choice of speciality teas that come from all parts of the world.


DO YOU LEAN TOWARDS THE SAVOURY SIDE?

Drink broth as a water alternative

If you find yourself getting a little peckish throughout the day, and your palate leans toward the savoury side, you may want to try out bouillons or broths.

Now I know this sounds a little strange…but hear me out for a couple of minutes…

There are numerous low-fat and low-sodium versions of these savoury options and at the end of they day – they are nothing more than (a posh version of) flavoured water!

Because these options are water-based, they also count towards your daily fluid consumption (which many people keep track of due to weight loss efforts).

Clint Eastwood slamming back a tumbler before taking out a group of Hard-drinking cowboys in an old western setup or Al Capone smuggling crates through a police barricade…sounds a better fit really doesn’t it?

Most people have a sort of love/hate relationship with this spirit – some love it’s warmth whilst others gag and shiver at the slightest sniff of the drink…

First off the bat – let’s take a closer look at the nutritional values of whiskey!

Whiskey is actually really low in levels of saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium and carbohydrates. At the end of the day there’s not really that much going on inside this golden liquid…well…other than alcohol of course! 🙂

Contrary to popular belief – whiskey contains no fat whatsoever and also has really low levels of sodium.

Of course, it does contain calories and carbohydrates but these come from the actual alcohol not the additives to the drink! These types of simple sugars are rapidly broken down by the body so they can be used for energy.

Whiskey & Dementia

Recent studies have concluded that Whiskey can increase your cognitive performance, therefore, cutting the chances of you getting dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Of course, alcohol is never going to be given as a treatment towards the two but the ellagic acid is known to be brilliant at taking on the Free Radicals in the body.

Free Radicals have been linked to messing about with the neural pathways, this is thought to increase the effects of dementia.

NOTE: So Whiskey can combat the slow decline towards dementia – but only in MODERATION. Drinking a bottle a night may well feel like great fun but it will actually kill brain cells NOT help them!

Remember – the key phrase once again is MODERATION. I cannot stress this firmly enough! Consuming large amounts of alcohol is definitely NOT a holiday experience for your heart!

Cancer needs no introduction – globally it is one of the biggest killers known to man! I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there seems to be a large rise in cancer infomercials these days on TV – this is for a reason.

As a species we are desperately trying to find new ways to slow the disease down and eventually (hopefully) find a lasting cure.

We’ve already mentioned the high content of ellagic acid in whiskey in this article a number of times – that is for a reason.

Ellagic acid really is one of the most powerful antioxidant compounds that we can put in our bodies.

As we touched on earlier on in the article – this type of acid battles against (or neutralizes) Free Radicals. These Free Radicals are very harmful byproducts of cellular metabolism that lead to all sorts of diseases in our bodies.

An example of some of these diseases are cancer, premature aging, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Now, lets get one thing straight here!

What is it with coffee? Why am I completely useless in the morning until I ‘down’ at least one cup of this tar-like beverage?

I’m not alone though, am I?

Most of us need that kick-start to our mornings even though we continuously hear how bad it is for us.

So what are the real negative effects of drinking coffee and why should we avoid over-consumption if possible?

The Negative Side to Coffee

High cholesterol, heart disease, and osteoporosis…doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence does it? But on the flip side of the coin, I’m constantly hearing about improved alertness, reducing the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, gallstones, kidney stones and liver cirrhosis for heavy drinkers.

So which way am I supposed to lean? From the sounds of things there are certainly pros and cons for this argument!

1) Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid production is stimulated if you drink coffee on an empty stomach – something that most of us do as soon as we get up in the morning!

At the end of the day hydrochloric acid should only be in action when your body needs to digest meals.

It’s like you’re actually overusing the function when you think about it – If your body has to create hydrochloric acid more often to handle cups of coffee, it may have difficulty creating enough to deal with a large meal.

2) The IBS Zone

Aaargh! Not a good place to be (believe me!).

Coffee does an awesome job of irritating your stomach and the lining of your small intestine. If you suffer from ulcers, gastritis, IBS or Crohn’s disease it’s best to stay away from the black liquid COMPLETELY!

3) Heartburn

Coffee manages to relax the lower esophageal sphincter – a muscle that needs to remain tightly closed after meals in order to stop your food from…returning (yuck!).

Recent studies have also shown that the decaf brands of coffee can also cause severe bouts of heartburn. They now believe that other compounds in coffee can also boost the chance of acid reflux problems.

4) Is There a Toilet Near Here? (Laxative Effect)

When you consume coffee you are boosting the effect of peristalsis in your body. Now peristalsis is the process inside our body that sort of makes us…release (you know what I mean!)

A sudden dash to the bathroom for instance!

Many people in need of laxatives use coffee to take care of their ‘stomach problems’ but there are problems with this method…

By kick-starting peristalsis, coffee also appears to promote increased gastric emptying. This means that the contents of the stomach are poured into the small intestines before it has been properly broken down.

When food is in this half digested state it’s nutrients are left behind and it multiplies the chances of irritation and inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract.

5) The Acrylamide Risk

Acrylamide is an actual cancer causing substance that grows in coffee when it is roasted at extremely high temperatures. 

This means that the darker the roast of the brand – the more acrylamide you will find inside the coffee’s build up!

We already know that white wine is made without the grape’s antioxidant-rich skin – so does this make a glass of white any less effective for heart health than red wine?

If you are trying to lose weight, you don’t have to swap out your chardonnay for sparkling white grape juice. It turns out that white wine is actually just as helpful toward slimming down your waistline as fruit juice!

In a 2004 study conducted by the University of Hohenheim in Germany measured participants whose diet involved 10 percent of energy deriving from white wine and compared it to a control group whose diet consisted of 10 percent of energy coming from juice.

The study concluded that participants attempting to lose weight by reducing their daily caloric intake saw just as much success drinking white wine as they did consuming traditional fruit juices.

Unfortunately, not all white wines are as jam-packed with powerful antioxidants. In fact, some don’t seem to have very many at all.

Which White Wines Are Best for Heart Health?

Fairly conclusively, research has shown that out of all white wine varieties from all over the globe, certain European white wines tend to be the most beneficial.

The white wines from France, Germany and Italy – specifically the Friuli Venezia region of Italy – are renowned for being particularly rich in the antioxidants tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol.

Now when it comes to variety, dryer white wines tend to be the better choice. Several studies have shown that Chardonnay has the highest count of the antioxidant polyphenols.

Sauvignon Blanc , another dry white wine, is also a good choice because it has proven anti-inflammatory properties.

Sweeter white wines like Reisling and Pinot Grigio aren’t necessarily bad for you in moderation – but keep in mind that since they are sweeter, they will generally contain more calories.

How Much White Wine Should You Drink?

While white wine may be good for you in a variety of different ways, but it’s important not to overindulge. The many benefits of white wine are based entirely around moderation consumption.

Moderation is different for everyone – but it is generally defined as a maximum one 5-ounce glass daily for adult women and two 5-ounce glasses a day for adult men.

Is White Wine Good for Your Heart?

When it comes to heart health, red wine gets all the credit. However, recent studies have shown that white wine is just as effective in promoting heart health and helping us live longer.

But that’s not all – white wine has many other health benefits as well, including disease-fighting properties from antioxidants, supporting weight loss, slowing the aging process and even helping to prevent diabetes.

So white wine is good for you – but some kinds are even better than others. When you have a choice, opt for European varieties, particularly those from the Friuli Venezia region of Italy.
