10 Popular Self-Cleansing Diet Plans

1) The Master Cleanse

Made famous by celebrities like Jared Leto and Beyoncé, the Master Cleanse is perhaps the most widely known cleanse program for detox and weight-loss.

It’s a 10-day regimen that consists of consuming six to 12 glasses of various liquids for nourishment and then taking laxatives.

Sounds simple enough – but the mix of liquids you’ll be consuming on the Master Cleanse aren’t exactly appetizing. It involves drinking everything from cayenne pepper lemonade to maple syrup.

And while the Master Cleanse helped Beyoncé drop a ton of weight for her starring role in 2006’s Dreamgirls, she complained that the rigorous program made her tired and cranky.

If want to try Master Cleanse for yourself, there are some ways to make it easier. There is an Ease-in/Ease-out route where you eat fresh fruits, veggies, juices and broths during the beginning and end of the cleanse.

2) Colon Cleanse

The practice of colon cleansing has actually been around for centuries— but it has seen resurgence in recent years.

These particular cleanses are intended to clear the colon of a buildup of undigested meat, foods and other mucus that builds up and produces toxins. These toxins are believed to cause fatigue, headaches and weight gain.

There are a variety of different ways to cleanse your colon. The first and most common is a simple over-the-counter cleanse which can be done via supplements, laxatives or even certain types of tea.

The second method is a little more intense; the process of colon irrigation consists of pumping water through your rectum in order to physically flush the toxins. If you opt for the colon irrigation method, you will need to visit a qualified colon therapist in order to undergo the procedure.

3) David Kirsch’s 48-Hour Supercharged Cleanse

Looking for a quick, low-commitment cleanse? The Supercharged Cleanse by David Kirsch can be completed in just two days!

Embracing the simple slogan “If you’re chewing, you’re cheating!” the Supercharged Cleanse consists of nutrient-rich drinks comprised of milk thistle, cranberry extract, acai berry, essential vitamins, minerals and more.

The 48-Hour Supercharged Cleanse promises to clear your system and jumpstart your metabolism- making it a fast, effective start to any new diet plan.

4) Juice Cleanse

As you probably know, juicing is a great way to get nutrients from fruits and vegetables without having to eat them. Instead, you blend them together in a juicer and create delicious, nutritious concoctions. So with a juice cleanse, you essentially replace all your solid food with juices.

There are a variety of different juice cleanses available for you to try. You are free to decide whichever one best fits your lifestyle… with one exception: it’s important to look for options that are low in sugar.

Unfortunately, many juices are laden with sugar and this can have adverse effects on your attempt to get healthy via cleanse.

5) The Candida Cleanse

The Candida Cleanse is done to target and treat an overgrowth of intestinal yeast and fungus. The first variation of this plan is a simple seven to 14 day plan which consists of eating raw vegetables in combination with daily detox drinks.

A variation of the Candida Cleanse is done specifically for colon cleansing – this involves liquids only (detox drinks and veggie broths) and incorporating colon irrigations.

6) The Clean Program

Made famous by Gwenyth Paltrow, the Clean Program is a three-week detox treatment program designed to help participants feel better, look younger and live even longer. It includes its own Clean supplements and meal replacements, so it is a system that has to be purchased online if you decide to do it.

For right around $425, the three-week Clean Program kit includes supplement packets, meal-replacement shakes, probiotic, recipes and a manual guide.

While on the cleanse, you’re also allowed a daily lunch made from Clean-approved foods like veggies, fruit, brown rice and lentils. Additionally, detoxifying lifestyle habits such as massage and meditation are recommended.

7) The Blueprint Cleanse

Another celebrity favorite, the Blueprint Cleanse is a juice-cleansing system customized to your individual health and wellness goals. You begin by picking your intensity level of cleanse which is broken down from beginner to advanced.

From there, you select what you hope to achieve (weight loss, invigoration, general wellness, etc.) and you will be sent six bottles of vegan juice specially curated to help you achieve your goals.

Not ready to commit to an all-juice cleanse? You can opt for the “Juice til Dinner” variation, which includes a selection of vegan and raw dinners in addition to your custom juice assortment.

8) Dr. Oz’s Skin Detox Cleanse

Not every cleanse is about making changes to your body – this cleanse is designed to help make changes to your face and leave you with a beautiful, glowing complexion.

Daytime television personality and health guru Dr. Oz coined this cleanse in spring of 2015. It involves cutting dairy and carbs for a period of days or weeks (depending on your level of determination) and swapping out one meal per day with a special detox smoothie – consisting of lemon, apple, cucumber, carrots, lemon and also bell pepper.

9) Liver Cleanse

The liver is a cleansing machine all on its own– it plays an important role in help detoxifying our blood from alcohol and rich, fatty foods. However, there are theories that eating certain types of food or taking special supplements can help cleanse the liver.

But be careful: sometimes detoxing your liver can do more harm than good. Over-the-counter dietary supplements are actually the second leading cause for hospitalizations due to liver damage.

If you want to detox your liver in a healthy way – improve your diet and lifestyle. Avoid illegal drugs, alcohol, high-fat foods and raw shellfish. Try to get more antioxidant vitamins like C, E and beta-carotene; and eat foods with more zinc and selenium.

10) 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse

Last year, this green smoothie cleanse by J.J. Smith swept social media. As you scrolled through your Instagram or Facebook feed, you probably saw enthusiastically filtered smoothie pics and posts from friends announcing they were doing the cleanse.

I hear they really help those with fatigue and weight gain but I thought all regiments would be to much for me. Guess their are plenty alternatives. Thanks for this information!

  6. Hi, very informative post. I am always looking at how I can best improve my health, especially as I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and I want to do everything possible so that it doesn’t come back. Your detox sounds amazing. I have given up sugar which I think is amazing for my health, but to do a detox on a regular basis is a great idea as I still enjoy a glass or two of wine! Thank you.

    1. A glass or two of wine is fine Jackie 🙂 (my guilty pleasure is red wine!)

Anyway, great to hear you’ve taken on that cancer and seem to have come through it. Good luck and good health to you in the future!

  7. A very inspiring and informative look at 10 different methods of cleansing with various time frames for completion. From colon, liver, ‘overgrowth of intestinal fungus and yeast,’ to health/wellness and just ‘looking good.’ There is a sensible array of choices.

I especially like the caution to always consult with a doctor before proceeding (colon cleanse). At the moment the juice cleanse with and emphasis on low sugar has my attention.

The videos provided are a great asset to the overall presentation. The summary provides additional important advise.

    Well done indeed!

    1. Well thank you Burt – you sound like another member of the website police LOL!

No seriously – it’s nice when people leave positive vibes on the articles – makes the whole webmaster process worthwhile.

We always try to warn people about contacting their GP or local doctor before taking anything ‘serious’ on. At the end of the day none of us here are doctors – myself and the other writers!

Great to have you here spreading your positive vibes – if you want to leave more on our other articles…be my guest!

  8. Hey Chris,

I guess I’m more to the juice cleanse. I think I’ve found the best combination to doing that. I’m not sure about others but for me, my combination is fresh orange + celery ( I was introduced to it a few years ago and it’s been a favorite of mine ever since…)

It has the right amount of nutrient to get you through the day and its cost-saving too for you to do everyday. I love these top 10 lists, hope you’ll write another list like this soon!

Keep up the good work mate – always love checking out your new health articles!

    1. Hi Riaz,

Well that sounds like a really interesting mix you have right there – I may well have to include it in the article above! 🙂

Orange has obvious benefits but the celery injection is really, really interesting. You see, celery has a high count of antioxidants and beneficial enzymes – great helpers in the cleansing war!

It also contains generous amounts of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium and vitamin B6.

So you see – mixing the two (orange and celery) packs quite a powerful cleansing punch – thanks so much for sharing this with our readers Riaz.

P.S. Do you add any spices or anything to bump up the taste at all?

  9. I have never tried a cleanse…I have a hard enough time replacing one meal with a drink let alone going days on a liquid diet. Do these cleanses mainly consist of veggies and fruits only? Are there cleanses out there that also include protein? I ask because working out and strength training is part of my regular routine and while a cleanse sounds appealing I wouldn’t want to sacrifice the protein my body and muscles need so I’m hoping you have something you could recommend to me. I’m open for any suggestions you may have.

    1. Hi Amber,

Don’t get bogged down in what you’ve read on the subject to this point – there are 100’s of different effective cleanses out there that all use different methods/ingredients. Have a look into it and see if you can find one that fits your lifestyle.

  10. Thank you – this is super-helpful.  If you try to Google up “cleanse” you get thousands and thousands of variations – all touting theirs as the best.  But with your “Self-Cleansing Diet Plan” post, now I have all the different types in one place and I can decide for myself which one might make sense.  I think your assessments are accurate – I’ve talked to my doctor about weight loss and he said you just have to be careful with these.  Cleansing your colon can remove all kids of *helpful* gut bacteria as well as the bad stuff.  And yes, juices have so much sugar!  He told me if you want juice, EAT AN ORANGE.  But the green smoothie thing – I got hooked on those in Mexico and they are fantastic.  I can have one for breakfast and I don’t need anything else until much later!  I could see making that one work.  Anyway, thanks again for all your work putting this together.  “Self-Cleansing Diet Plan” is now my go-to article for information on cleansing.

    1. I know what you mean Don…when I first started researching this subject I came across a ton of crap online about really average cleanse techniques. Hopefully this article will point you in the right direction! 🙂

  11. You have gone all out with this post on self-cleansing diet plans listed! I had heard of a few of the options, but the rest were all new to me. I do believe that cleansing the body regularly is not a bad thing to do, I think of my body as a machine, and there are times when, like any machine, it needs to be cleaned up.

Of the ones I do know about and have used, the 10-day green smoothie cleanse brought me the best results. I was interested in a couple of the others you expanded on, so will add these into the queue to try them out. These include the Master Cleanse and the Colon Cleanse…

It makes sense to also have a doctor chime in, I do consult prior to trying new natural health practices, and it has saved me in some cases from maybe harming myself. My doctor knows my machine as much as I do, so he will not pull any punches when advising me.

This was an informative and useful article, thanks much and I have bookmarked!

    1. Good to hear that the 10-day green smoothie cleanse brought you good results Dave, I hope the others work out just as well! 🙂
