Negative Effects of Drinking Coffee

What is it with coffee? Why am I completely useless in the morning until I ‘down’ at least one cup of this tar-like beverage?

I’m not alone though, am I?

Most of us need that kick-start to our mornings even though we continuously hear how bad it is for us.

So what are the real negative effects of drinking coffee and why should we avoid over-consumption if possible?

The Negative Side to Coffee

High cholesterol, heart disease, and osteoporosis…doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence does it? But on the flip side of the coin, I’m constantly hearing about improved alertness, reducing the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, gallstones, kidney stones and liver cirrhosis for heavy drinkers.

So which way am I supposed to lean? From the sounds of things there are certainly pros and cons for this argument!

1) Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid production is stimulated if you drink coffee on an empty stomach – something that most of us do as soon as we get up in the morning!

At the end of the day hydrochloric acid should only be in action when your body needs to digest meals.

It’s like you’re actually overusing the function when you think about it – If your body has to create hydrochloric acid more often to handle cups of coffee, it may have difficulty creating enough to deal with a large meal.

2) The IBS Zone

Aaargh! Not a good place to be (believe me!).

Coffee does an awesome job of irritating your stomach and the lining of your small intestine. If you suffer from ulcers, gastritis, IBS or Crohn’s disease it’s best to stay away from the black liquid COMPLETELY!

3) Heartburn

Coffee manages to relax the lower esophageal sphincter – a muscle that needs to remain tightly closed after meals in order to stop your food from…returning (yuck!).

Recent studies have also shown that the decaf brands of coffee can also cause severe bouts of heartburn. They now believe that other compounds in coffee can also boost the chance of acid reflux problems.

4) Is There a Toilet Near Here? (Laxative Effect)

When you consume coffee you are boosting the effect of peristalsis in your body. Now peristalsis is the process inside our body that sort of makes us…release (you know what I mean!)

A sudden dash to the bathroom for instance!

Many people in need of laxatives use coffee to take care of their ‘stomach problems’ but there are problems with this method…

By kick-starting peristalsis, coffee also appears to promote increased gastric emptying. This means that the contents of the stomach are poured into the small intestines before it has been properly broken down.

When food is in this half digested state it’s nutrients are left behind and it multiplies the chances of irritation and inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract.

5) The Acrylamide Risk

Acrylamide is an actual cancer causing substance that grows in coffee when it is roasted at extremely high temperatures. 

This means that the darker the roast of the brand – the more acrylamide you will find inside the coffee’s build up!

  1. Your article grabbed my attention because I am a coffee drinker. The information that you provide is interesting and causes me to think.
    Is there any amount of coffee that is safe to drink? Are the issues that you named in your article caused by a certain amount of coffee that a person drinks? will everyone have the same effects when drinking coffee?
    Your article has certainly created a lot of questions for me.

      Most of us a well within the safe limits but it’s worth pointing out the negative effects in the article above!

  2. Thanks for the info. I am a regular coffee drinker, black, no sugar! I think that if you stay within reasonable limits, just like alcohol or a cookie, it shouldn’t kill you. However, anything in excess can be problematic. The negative effects that you list are good to keep in mind. If you begin experiencing any of these issues, then you can try cutting down on the coffee before trying a medication or other treatment. Thanks again.

    Thanks for this info. I’ve been googling effects of coffee for a few days now trying to gather as much info as I can because my wife and I have got into the habit of drinking a lot of it and I’m starting to wonder if maybe we should stop or cut back.

    From what you say there are definitely more negative effects than positive. So would you say that most of these effects are cause by the caffeine itself or by other ingredients in coffee?

    What if I switched to black tea in the morning? Do you think that would be healthier?


    1. Well caffeine is the main culprit Robert so it’s best to concentrate on that really! I try and have one regular coffee in the morning to get me going then decaff for the rest of the day!

    At least 3 of the negative effects you listed about coffee I didn’t know about. I don’t personally drink it myself but I know people and have clients who guzzle through out the day. I am going to pm them the link to this page.

    Apart from the energy boost you get from drinking coffee, are there any other positive effects from it?

    1. Well not really David – it is a sort of natural amphetamine at the end of the day so the benefits are few and far between!

  5. I had no idea acrylamide was formed from the coffee beans. I am going to think twice about drinking coffee. I definitely have the acid reflux problem. Thanks for the helpful information. Great website.

  6. I drink a full plunger of fresh ground coffee every morning…. are there no antioxidants in coffee?? I heard there were… so does coffee cause cancer? Also, I heard that various chemicals in coffee actually creates ‘good’ cholesterol… is this true? Is this the same between instant coffee and freshly brewed coffee?

    1. LOL this article strictly covers the negative effects of coffee Steve – I think you’re clutching at straws if you drink a full canister/plunger of coffee every morning!

      There are certain links between coffee and cancer but I’m not the guy to ask to prove these – I’m no doctor at the end of the day and I don’t work in the medical sector.

      I think we all know by now that regulation is key – are you regulating it every morning?
