Kefir Benefits For Weight Loss

Kefir Benefits For Weight Loss

Recently, there has been much hype about Kefir benefits for weight loss, and many people who have tried it can attest to the truth of the statement.

Kefir is not a recent innovation and has actually been around for thousands of years, but its ability to help you shed the extra pounds has been kept a secret.

So, what exactly is Kefir?

It is a sour creamy beverage made from specific gelatinous grains fermented in cow, sheep, goat, coconut, rice, or soy milk.

It has a refreshing taste and flavor, and it contains beneficial yeast and friendly probiotics similar to those found in yogurt.

It also contains nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, and minerals that the body needs.

It has its origins in Russia, but its use has become widespread because of the numerous benefits it has to offer, one of them being weight loss.

Digestion

Maintaining a healthy digestive system is one of the key contributing factors towards weight loss.

The digestive system can be disrupted by various issues such as stress, lack of dietary fiber, poor diet choices, and environmental toxins that we consume unknowingly.

Naturally, your gut contains both good and bad bacteria that are essential in food digestion and nutrient absorption.

When you are not getting proper nutrition, the natural setting of the system goes out of balance, and your body becomes dominated by pathogenic bacteria and yeast.

These pathogenic microorganisms thrive on sugar and processed foods, and they can cause you to develop cravings for more food even when your stomach is full.

This is because the nutrients that your body needs are being taken away from the food by these pathogens.

Press Reset!

In relation to the situation described above, Kefir helps to reset balance in your digestive system.

It creates a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria and yeast and ensures that your body is benefiting from the nutrients in the food you are consuming.

In this way, you don’t have to eat extra servings, and this is helpful in losing weight.

It also cuts down the food cravings by ensuring that your body feels more nourished and balanced, especially because the proteins in Kefir will keep you feeling full for a long time.

It will also boost your energy expenditure thus helping you to reduce body fat, and this directly translates to weight loss.

Counting Calories

Research has shown that Kefir promotes bowel movement, which is crucial in losing weight.

Although there is no direct connection between the bowel movement and weight loss, it is usually an indication that your digestive tract is on the right track.

It is also worth noting that for you to achieve weight loss using Kefir, you need to choose low-fat Kefir and combine this with a low-calorie diet.

A cup of low-fat Kefir has been found to contain just 110 calories and 2 grams of fat which is equivalent to one serving of dairy.

Consuming three servings on a daily basis will help you lose weight and reduce belly fat. It will ensure that you are consuming far fewer calories than you are consuming each day.

However, it is important that you combine it with any other weight loss measures you have been taking, such as regular exercise.

Some people have posed the question of how Kefir is different from yogurt and other dairy products in terms of helping to lose weight.

The difference is that unlike yogurt, Kefir does not contain added sugar. It only has natural sugar, and this makes it a healthier choice.

Also, Kefir contains several major strains of friendly yeasts and bacteria not commonly found in yogurt. It has a higher nutritional value and keeps your colon clean and healthy.

The Bottom Line

The reason why Kefir is a favorite of many is because it can be used even by people who suffer from dairy intolerance.

The beneficial bacteria and yeast in this drink produce enzyme lactase, which breaks down most of the lactose found in dairy.

Additionally, they can substitute the dairy product with soy, coconut, or rice milk, and then get to enjoy Kefir benefits for weight loss.

Kefir is not only good for weight loss, but also for your overall health. Its excellent nutritional content offers healing and health-maintenance benefits to people in every type of condition.

  1. I like all the information about kefir that you have provided. I have made it a lot over the past ten years, although not for weight loss. I did find that the bacteria from kefir stays in your gut longer than bacteria from yogurt. It takes about a week for the kefir bacteria to work and continues working about that long after you quit drinking it. I love it plain, it has a refreshing tangy taste. It has helped me to tolerate raw milk.

    1. Good to hear that some kefir benefits have worked out for you Sue. Don’t forget to pop back here and let us know about any other updates you have on it!

  2. I learned years ago about the probiotics in Kefir when I was taking lots of antibiotics. It helped me a lot in avoiding a yeast issue. I never knew that is was safe for a person that is lactose intolerant!! That is great to know. I am lactose intolerant and try to avoid dairy. When I used kefir before, I would buy these fruit smoothies that would NOT encourage weight loss though since they were loaded with sugar and were high in calories. Is there a form of kefir I should look for to encourage weight loss?

    1. Yeah stay well away from the store bought smoothies Erin – the amount of sugar plugged into them is terrifying at times. The more organic you can find Kefir the better!

  3. Hi Chris, This was interesting to read and does make sense. I wanted to say that I really love your logo and name! Very fitting and easy to remember.

A friend of mine was telling me about probiotics. Would this be considered the same? I like the idea that it does not contain added sugars. I may have to give this a try.

  4. Kefir looks really good and it might have nutritional benefits although I really wonder how it tastes. It is really nice and has many benefits but the only point that is backing me off is the taste and it looks kind of creepy.
Have you tried it? How does it taste?
How much weight loss can I expect from it?

    1. Well in a word….sour! It depends how you treat it and prepare it of course but a lot of people buy prepacked yogurts that contain it.

  5. Thank you for a very informative post. This is the first time I heard of kefir, and the article covered its benefits. As someone who watches his weight, I will certainly look into trying this. I’ve always kept yogurt in my diet as a benefit to my digestion system, but kefir sounds like it may be even more effective and fairly easy to make.

    Keep up the good work!

  6. Wow, I’ve always heard that kefir was an excellent probiotic but I didn’t know it could do all of this. You said it’s best to take it three times a day. Would that just be after each meal? I always take it after my meals because I heard that is when it can help you the most but I didn’t realize that it’s helping you by allowing you to actually use the nutrients in your foods. Where can you get kefir from and does it matter what it’s fermented in? Do some things provide greater benefits than others?

    1. Hiya Jessica,

There are many different options on Amazon at the moment – Milk Kefir Grains (Live Organically Grown), Kefir Starter Cultures…the list goes on and on. They are quite reasonably priced as well!

I’m the same as you – I take it after meals, I actually prefer to take most health options after meals as it eliminates the threat of stomach problems. Hope this helps!

  7. Chris,

Kefir is something I have never heard about. I have heard of probiotics within yogurt, but though I have yogurt all the time don’t feel as though they are helping. How do you buy this stuff? Nutrition stores, grocery, online? It sounds interesting and I don’t mind trying new things. Is it expensive? I will say the picture is not that appealing but hey the benefits sound like they out weight the appearance. Thanks for the informative post.

    Mario

    1. LOL I Know what you mean Mario – the picture does not really make it look the tastiest of choices out there does it?

I usually opt to buy it online these days because you can get it MUCH cheaper. There are physical stores that supply it in most towns/cities but I’ve always found their prices unrealistic at best. Try Amazon first!

Hope this helps mate – thanks for stopping by and reading our article! 🙂
