Homemade Healthy Salad Dressing Recipes

In this article we will be looking into a collection of homemade healthy salad dressing recipes I have gathered over the last several years.

If I’m totally honest with you – I was never much of a salad freak!

I know, I know – shock! Horror!

I loved the fitness side of healthy living and I sometimes (well frequently) slipped off the straight and narrow to dive into something a little greasy.

All that changed when I first met my partner who was originally from Bulgaria. It turns out the salad plays a BIG part in nearly every meal of a Bulgarian’s day!

I can remember being shocked to see such a pretty young girl tucking into what I can only describe as a ‘bucket’ full of leafy green salad.

She introduced me to some pretty awesome homemade salad dressings and they were a complete game changer.

It’s mad to think how simple yet effective these bombshells are…

Easy Healthy Salad Dressing Recipes

You’re probably well aware that leafy green vegetables are among the healthiest foods on planet earth.

The problem is that most people can’t really handle the bland taste and turn to salad dressings as a taste booster…

But most of these salad dressings are caloric monstrosities!

A lot of the time this problem is made a LOT worse by the big supermarket chains labeling dressings as healthy options.

Well, most of the time these labels are complete crap – the dressings on offer are far from healthy.

ingredients like soybean oil, corn oil, and high fructose corn syrup are all GMO filled I’m afraid, and this spells disaster for your diet.

Simply put – these chain manufacturers are pumping cheap, highly processed ingredients into their salad dressings…

And the effects they have on your health are NOT good!

I have picked three of my favorite heart healthy salad dressing recipes for this article today – and each one contains no more than FIVE simple ingredients!

These are all options that my now fiancee brought over from Eastern Europe with her (thanks Adriana!).

Lemon Thyme Vinaigrette

Ingredients:

• 3 T olive oil
• 2 T lemon juice
• 1 T red wine vinegar
• 1 T minced thyme
• ½ tsp. kosher salt

From what I can gather this simple little beauty contains no more than 91 calories in under 10 grams of fat.

It’s a favorite over in Bulgaria and now it’s a favorite back here in Wales with me! 🙂

Sesame Soy Dressing

Ingredients:

• 2 T olive oil
• 1 T sesame oil
• 1 tsp. low sodium soy sauce
• 1 T red wine vinegar

This was actually the first dressing my partner introduced me to as she’s a big fan of Sesame oil – the same goes for me now as well!

It’s slightly more fattening than the last option coming in at 132 calories.

Bulgarian-Style Healthy Caesar Option

Ingredients:

• 2 minced anchovies
• 2 T lemon juice
• 2 T parmesan cheese
• 2 T Greek yogurt
• 1 T olive oil

This one tends to work as a side dressing to any main meal – I always find it a little more user-friendly than the others!

The coolest thing about it is that it comes in at a tiny 82 calories – not bad eh?

Our Homemade Salad Dressing Recipes

Well I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about our homemade healthy salad dressing recipes – they really have been a game changer for my approach to salads!

I would recommend trying a cool mix of greens to go with each one – don’t be afraid to think outside the box and spice it up a bit!

I personally like to mix about with the following green ingredients:

  • Romaine
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Watercress
  • Arugula

The three recipes we’ve covered above work out best at about 3 to 4 servings.
