Homemade Healthy Salad Dressing Recipes

Homemade Healthy Salad Dressing Recipes

In this article we will be looking into a collection of homemade healthy salad dressing recipes I have gathered over the last several years.

If I’m totally honest with you – I was never much of a salad freak!

I know, I know – shock! Horror!

I loved the fitness side of healthy living and I sometimes (well frequently) slipped off the straight and narrow to dive into something a little greasy.

All that changed when I first met my partner who was originally from Bulgaria. It turns out the salad plays a BIG part in nearly every meal of a Bulgarian’s day!

I can remember being shocked to see such a pretty young girl tucking into what I can only describe as a ‘bucket’ full of leafy green salad.

She introduced me to some pretty awesome homemade salad dressings and they were a complete game changer.

It’s mad to think how simple yet effective these bombshells are…

Easy Healthy Salad Dressing Recipes

You’re probably well aware that leafy green vegetables are among the healthiest foods on planet earth.

The problem is that most people can’t really handle the bland taste and turn to salad dressings as a taste booster…

But most of these salad dressings are caloric monstrosities!

A lot of the time this problem is made a LOT worse by the big supermarket chains labeling dressings as healthy options.

Well, most of the time these labels are complete crap – the dressings on offer are far from healthy.

ingredients like soybean oil, corn oil, and high fructose corn syrup are all GMO filled I’m afraid, and this spells disaster for your diet.

Simply put – these chain manufacturers are pumping cheap, highly processed ingredients into their salad dressings…

And the effects they have on your health are NOT good!

I have picked three of my favorite heart healthy salad dressing recipes for this article today – and each one contains no more than FIVE simple ingredients!

These are all options that my now fiancee brought over from Eastern Europe with her (thanks Adriana!).

Lemon Thyme Vinaigrette

• 3 T olive oil
• 2 T lemon juice
• 1 T red wine vinegar
• 1 T minced thyme
• ½ tsp. kosher salt

From what I can gather this simple little beauty contains no more than 91 calories in under 10 grams of fat.

It’s a favorite over in Bulgaria and now it’s a favorite back here in Wales with me! 🙂

Sesame Soy Dressing

• 2 T olive oil
• 1 T sesame oil
• 1 tsp. low sodium soy sauce
• 1 T red wine vinegar

This was actually the first dressing my partner introduced me to as she’s a big fan of Sesame oil – the same goes for me now as well!

It’s slightly more fattening than the last option coming in at 132 calories.

Bulgarian-Style Healthy Caesar Option

• 2 minced anchovies
• 2 T lemon juice
• 2 T parmesan cheese
• 2 T Greek yogurt
• 1 T olive oil

This one tends to work as a side dressing to any main meal – I always find it a little more user-friendly than the others!

The coolest thing about it is that it comes in at a tiny 82 calories – not bad eh?

  1. Aw brilliant, you know I am always stuck for salad dressings and yes, I have to admit – I have bought quite a few ready ones and they are NEVER the same, (plus full of junk like you say). I like the sound of the soy one, I will give some a go. Thanks!

  2. I love salads but never really thought about making my own until I read this article. I am a big fan of caesar salads… so I will definitely try the Bulgarian Style Healthy Caesar recipe! My other favorite is Ranch… I’m a good ole Southern girl… so love my ranch with just about everything!

  3. Hi there,

Awesome! I love my salads, usually, I go without dressings or make my own mix of extra virgin olive oil and vinegarette, due to exactly what you say the pre-made salad dressings are rank rotten for your health.

My gracious thanks to Miss Bulgaria for the lovely salad dressing recepies.

  4. Hey, I am a fitness blogger and commited to eating healthy.
But to be honest, I am not really a fan of salads, mainly due to the dressing that come with it.
But looking at the low calorie dressings, maybe I would try one now!
Thanks for the three recipes, I especially love the last one.

  5. I love the salad dressings you present. I’ve never thought they could be so easily made, some with only a few ingredients.
When you say 3T, does it mean 3 tablespoons? Just to be sure.
As I regularly make salads, almost for every meal, to acompany the main, I would keep you posted how my loved ones liked your recipes.
    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. Yep that’s tablespoons Ellie…from what I can remember LOL. Maybe try and it and see haha – I’ll take the blame if it’s wrong! 🙂

  6. Like many people, I would much rather have a burger and fries than a salad…I’m afraid I’ve been that way most of my life!

But I’ve been trying to lose some weight so I’ve been eating salads as often as I can fit them in….yay haha.

But at the same time my problem is a love of Caesar dressing(s) which are not exactly healthy in the long run. So I think I’m going to try your Bulgarian-Style Healthy Caesar recipe and see how I like it.

Do you have this problem with salads? Do you like to add dressings? What do you do to jazz up your salad options?

Sorry about all the questions – I’ve been looking for some answers on this all morning and your article seems to cover the correct topics!

Looking forward to hearing from you,

    1. Hi there Nick,

First of all I think we’re probably all a little bit ‘burger and fries’ behind the mask…even though a larger majority of the health crowd won’t admit it!

And why wouldn’t we be? Burger and fries are super-tasty!

It’s moderation on that front at the end of the day – burger and fries twice a week ain’t gonna mess up a health regime that much…regardless of what the so-called health gurus are telling you!

As for salads – it’s ALL about the dressing…but not the dressing option that you seem to have gone for LOL.

Why don’t you simply try a cheap homemade dressing like – olive oil, vinegar and a little salt?

Seriously, try it out – you’ll be super surprised at the change it makes to salad!

Okay, okay, I like unhealthy salad dressings myself but at the end of the day they are exactly that – unhealthy!!!

  7. I’ve never really been super into green salads either. And I don’t understand why people love ranch dressing so much. In my opinion, ranch is one of the worst dressings out there. I have never tried making my own salad dressing before, but I think I would really love to because sometimes I like to just drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar on a salad and eat it like that, so why not go one step further and just make a salad dressing? I think the sesame soy dressing sounds the best because I love that little taste of Asia. I will have to give it a try!

    1. Well olive oil and balsamic vinegar is actually a salad dressing Mariah (one I use myself) – so you’re already using a pretty healthy one…without even knowing it!!!

  8. Hi Chris, you are absolutely right about most of salad dressings being unhealthy. I used to be a salad freak but had to withdraw as a result of too much weight gain which probably was a result of salad dressings. Now that I have seen your own dressings recipe, I think I will start enjoying my salad again. I am particularly interested in Lemon Thyme Vinaigrette, wow, less than 91 calories is definitely good, and the ingredients are so simple.I am so going to try this out. Thanks once again.

  9. Hi! I really didn’t know Bulgarians had salad in almost every meal. I’ll start to check my ancestors ‘cause my grandma and mom are truly salad freaks! LOL

And having that as a background, I really pay attention every time somebody is giving a salad recipe. I have come to appreciate the benefits that a ‘bucket’ full of leafy green salad brings to our health.

I’ll try the Caesar option. It really seems simple to prepare. And I already love the traditional Caesar salad. Thank you very much for giving me more options concerning salad dressings.
